How an OSRS Drop Race works

Running a drop race

Same setup as a skill race, racing on kills instead of XP.

  1. Create a drop race — Pick which boss the event races on, from Wise Old Man's full boss list.
  2. Set the event window — Same start and end date as any event — the race locks in however many kills each player gets between the two.
  3. Open it up — Choose who can join like any event — open, Discord-locked, or invite only.
  4. Sync anytime — Kill counts update automatically on a schedule, or trigger an immediate sync yourself before checking standings.
  5. Let it close — Standings freeze at the end date, so the final leaderboard reflects exactly what everyone killed inside the window.
The first step of the create-event dialog: a five-step bar reading Template, Type, Basics, Format and Access, with ready-made formats to start from — among them Boss of the Month, Boss of the Week and Barrows Rush — or the option to start from scratch.

Joining a drop race

Link your username once, then just kill the boss.

  1. Link your OSRS username — Add your username in account settings first — the race can't start you without one to look up.
  2. Enter the race — Your kill count on that boss the moment you enter becomes your starting line, so it's kills during the event that count, not your lifetime total.
  3. Play as normal — No screenshots, no manual logging — Wise Old Man syncs your kill count in the background.
  4. Watch the leaderboard — Standings update live as syncs come in, so you can see where you stand without asking in Discord.
A live drop race standings table: five entrants ranked by Zulrah kills since the race started, each with their OSRS name, their display name and their gain, and a line saying when the numbers were last read.

Kill count, not drop luck

A drop race is really a killcount race — it measures how many times you killed the chosen boss during the event, not what actually dropped. That keeps it fair regardless of RNG: a player who kills the boss a hundred times without a single unique still outranks someone who got lucky on kill three but stopped there.

How progress is tracked

No spreadsheets, no manual reporting.

  • Synced automatically — A scheduled job pulls a fresh kill count for every entrant, so nobody has to report their own progress.
  • Sync on demand — A host can trigger an immediate sync to get a current readout before announcing standings.
  • Locked to your username — Progress ties to the OSRS username on your account, so it can't be mixed up with anyone else's.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to link my OSRS username?

Yes — the race looks up your kill count through Wise Old Man, and it can't do that without a username on your account.

Do I have to report my own kills?

No. Kill counts sync automatically from Wise Old Man on a schedule, and a host can trigger an extra sync at any time.

What if I already had kills on the boss before the race started?

It doesn't count against you — your kill count at the moment you enter becomes your starting line, so only kills gained during the event score.

Can I leave a race partway through?

Yes, but not if it would discard progress you've already made — settle your standing first the same way you would for any event.
